This course introduces learners to the principles and practices of animal production, focusing on the management of livestock for food, income, and sustainable livelihoods. It covers the scientific, technical, and practical aspects of rearing major farm animals including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, and emerging livestock species.
Learners will study animal breeds and breeding, housing and nutrition, reproduction and health management, as well as production systems (intensive, semi-intensive, and extensive). Emphasis is placed on sustainable livestock farming practices, animal welfare, and integration of livestock production into modern agribusiness.
The course further develops learners’ competencies in practical animal husbandry, disease prevention and control, record keeping, and marketing of livestock products such as milk, meat, eggs, hides, and skins. By the end of the course, learners will have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to improve productivity, ensure food security, and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities in the livestock sector

This course introduces students to the principles and practices of crop production with a focus on sustainable, efficient, and climate-resilient farming methods. It explores the biological, environmental, and technological factors that influence crop growth, development, and yield. Learners will gain knowledge on crop classification, soil and water management, planting techniques, pest and weed control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.
The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical experiences to enable students to understand and apply modern techniques in field crop production. Special attention is given to major staple and cash crops grown in Kenya and East Africa, promoting food security and agribusiness opportunities.
